The Assyrian Winged Bull
The winged bull was the symbol of the Assyrian Empire in Nineveh.
The rigor of the Assyrian statuary can be measured according to the exactness
of the features, frozen in ceremonial attitudes yet extremely gentle.
The pontifical tiara enhances further the imperial nature of the face.
The bull with eagle's wings and a man's head represented a protective spirit,
combining the strength of animals with human wisdom.
Such statues were often placed at the gates to cities and palaces.
Nineveh (Mousel), an old city, is located in northern Bet Nahrin
(Today known as Iraq) and mentioned more than once in the Bible. |
