GEWARGIS
TOMA
'Gago'

Brief History

Gewargis was born in Nineveh province (Mosul).

As a young child he and his family then moved

to Kirkuk where he was later employed by I.P.C.

(Iraqi Petroleum Company).

As a young adult he then joined the football team representing I.P.C., playing side by side with fellow players; Youarish Isaac Benyamin, Sargis Younan (Saga), Shmouel Youshia (Chowi), Korshed Namiq,

Azzo Younan and many others.

He also played for various sport clubs and was included in the Kirkuk National Team. He was given the opportunity to compete both nationally and internationally against many prestigious teams from around the globe.

Gago as he was known was an outstanding football player. His position was ‘left wing’. Many spectators and other sportsmen go to witness his fast speed, smart tactics and his great control over the ball which in turn helped him to score many goals!

Being a great athlete he also involved himself in swimming and running where he received numerous trophies.

Gago’s cousin is the renowned football player late Youra Eshaya. Youra was one of the most famous football player’s in Iraq.

Gago contributed so much towards sport, and it will continue to be remembered in many years to come. Rest in peace our beloved football player.

We take this opportunity to thank his family, including his wife, sons, daughter and their families. Special thanks to his son Ninos who provided us with photos which have been published in this magazine.
