Brief
History
Ashor Gabriel
He started his journey in 1968 when he was in
the Army playing for Al-Mushat (Infantry) Unit Team for two years bringing
immediate impact to the team being the top scorer during term and 2nd scorer
in the league.
In 1969, he was selected for Iraqi National
Military team under the Russian coach Dr. Yuri Illichev and his assistant
the legendary Emmanuel “Ammo” Baba.
His first trip with the National Team came for
the Arab Nations Army Tournament in Syria in the same year when he was
selected for the Iraqi National and Olympic team.
His first game with the National team was
against East Germany that played in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. This was
just the beginning of a series of matches with the National team against
teams like Russia, Egypt, Morocco, & Korea.

In 1970 Ashor was released from his Army
service and immediately was offered to play with the well known Firqa El-Thalitha
(Al-Jaish FC today)playing alongside great players like Shidrock Yusif,
Jabar Rishat and excelling as the top scorer of the team.
In 1971, he decided to leave Iraq and played as
a professional with Salam Zerketa and playing with Racing Beirut who were
the current Premier League Champions of 1969-1970 in Lebanon in
international matches against Romania and Czechoslovak, Bulgaria
In 1984, He was selected to be the assistant
coach during the Olympic try outs for the Midwest region under coach Paul
Matt.
Among many of his achievements stands the 1995,
96, 97 championshipswith the Chicago Winged Bull and being a Two time Winner
for the Nations Cup. I was head coach of Romanian team to win nation cup. I
was 3 years head coach of the Croatian Soccer team of Chicago to win in the
major division and the Midwest Region Open Cup.
He
currently holds a US B license coaching certificate and has coached over a
thousand players from the youth to adult divisions over the years.

In 1972, Ashor’s travels brought him to the
City of Chicago in the United States of America and as always immediately
played with a Semi-professional club in Chicago, since Soccer was just
establishing it’s professional roots in the USA He played with Olympics for
6 months before he made the decision to play for his own community where he
started and beloved and with none other than the Chicago Winged Bull. His
journey with the club took him for 20 years playing and later coaching the
team collecting many honors and was the only player to be the top scorer in
the 3rd, 2nd, 1st and Major Division. He was the only player to score 100
goals in the Major Division of the city of Chicago and still holds the
record of scoring 67 goals in the National soccer League.

As he became the coach of the Chicago Winged Bull
in 1978, he helped the team move from the 1st Division to the Major Division
and be selected to be the head coach for the state of Illinois and the 1st
Assyrian to become the head coach in the National Soccer League.
